As artists, we all know that writing is an integral part of a creative practice, but it is hard to set aside time to write about the work we make, and it can also be hard to know how to tap into or develop the skill of writing.

I use writing all the time as a way to process and plan, but I can always use more support, direction, and accountability as I write artist statements, applications, and the other stuff artists are expected to write and keep updated.

Consider this a beginning, a first draft: Four weeks in May to work on the basic elements, with more ideas, formats, and time frames to come. Though I believe the classes are most useful when we gather as a group at the same time, sessions will be recorded in case you need to miss a class.

Before We Meet:

I will send a list of my favorite books and resources, as well as some examples of artist statements and bios.

You will gather a notebook, some large format paper (I like a big pad of 18”x24” newsprint, but I’m also a fan of using whatever you might have lying around), and your favorite pens, pencils, markers, crayons: whatever you like to write with. We will start working with paper and pen, writing longhand before moving to the computer.

Session 1: Artist Statement (or other project that feels intimidating—the exercises are flexible enough to apply to other writing projects)

We will start by establishing personal goals (or you might say setting an intention) for our time together, and generate writing to develop into an artist statement through a series of free-writing and mapping exercises.

Session 2: Artist Bio/CV/Resume (or, how to talk about yourself)

Through lists, free writing, and collaborative exercises, we will develop language to talk about ourselves and our accomplishments in a way that feels authentic and professional.

Session 3: Workshop/Feedback

Using the principles of Liz Lerman’s Critical Response Process, we will break into small groups to share our writing in progress and give constructive feedback.

Session 4: Final Revision, Sharing, Celebration

We will wrap up by sharing our work with one another and, if applicable, adding or sending it to the places that need it (like, your website, that application in progress, etc).
